Requirements

  • macOS or Linux. Windows is not supported.
  • git on your PATH.
  • At least one supported coding agent: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot CLI, Cline, Pi or OpenCode.

Install

1

Run the install script

You can read it first: payback.sh/install.sh. It downloads one self-contained binary into ~/.local/share/payback/versions/<version>/, points ~/.local/share/payback/current at it, and links ~/.local/bin/payback.
2

Setup runs on its own

The script finishes by running payback, which signs you in with GitHub in the browser, offers your past sessions on public repositories for review, and turns on passive income. Setup walks through each screen.
3

Check that it's on

shows the account you’re signed in as, which agents have hooks, and what has been uploaded.
If payback isn’t found afterwards, ~/.local/bin isn’t on your PATH. Add it in your shell profile, or run ~/.local/bin/payback directly.

Updating

The CLI updates itself: the background uploader checks for a newer release on each cycle and installs it next to the current one, switching over atomically. payback update does the same right away. The previous version is kept for rollback.

Uninstalling

payback uninstall removes the hooks from every agent and the background timers, and leaves your agents’ own settings as they were. Deleting your data covers what remains and how to remove it.
